New Year's Day Parade, London 2013

A bright start to 2013 came as 17th Tonbridge joined The National Massed Bugle Band of 80 or so musicians performing together amongst 6,000 participants at the annual New Year's Day Parade in London.  Watched by an international audience of thousands lining the sunny streets and millions viewing worldwide TV coverage, the commentators praised "this British band" who, despite little time to rehearse together, had performed to a high standard and set a commendable example.  Many congratulations to members from all the Bands we worked with, for your consistent musicianship, a polished display, and flying the flag for traditional marching bands!  Happy New Year!

Let the festivities begin!

Taking the lead at three recent festive occasions, the Band opened both the Tonbridge Christmas Festival and Wrotham Christmas Fayre, as well as heading up the local Christmas church parade in north Tonbridge. The Festival display was described in the Tonbridge Courier as "a stirring performance", and the following Saturday in Wrotham involved 3 more confident performances, including escorting Santa safely to his grotto and no doubt liftingthe spirits with festive cheer!  So, as another busy and fulfilling term draws to a close may we .. "wish you a merry Christmas, we wish you a merry Christmas, we wish you a merry Christmas, and a happy New Year!"

"We will remember them."

Band leads Bonfire Parade

A chilly evening, but warm welcome, met the Band as they led the prestigious Edenbridge Bonfire Parade at a leisurely pace through the packed High Street and back again.  A popular parade, lit along the way by fiery torches, was enjoyed by participants and spectators alike with a confident performance given by the Band, this being the second year they have been invited.

Early on Sunday 7th October the Band headed north to Manchester where they “put on their best performances of the year” in national marching bands’ Concert and Arena competitions.

Gold with Distinction was awarded to the Band in the Concert competition for achieving over 90%.   Extra entertainment devised and performed by David Hardman and friends no doubt enhanced the marks given.

In the Arena competition a 5th place was achieved in National Class (the highest class), with only a few marks between the 5th & 2nd place.  Congratulations to all members for their hard work and for 2nd place in turnout.  It was good to see Samuel Johnston winning Drum Major, the drums taking second place and the bells third place.

17th Tonbridge is one of the youngest and largest Bands competing at national level, so with a little more practice and experience securing a higher position at future competitions will be very possible.

Half-marathon morning!

A relatively early Sunday morning start did not deter Band members from turning out despite predicted wet weather.  As well as two strong parade performances the Band was in good voice as it cheered and clapped participants of the Tonbridge half-marathon through Leigh village at 4 miles.   Their second performance marked 9 miles, brightening a grey morning and no doubt lifting the spirits of runners and their supporters!

A fair start to the Autumn

Good weather set the scene at both the Chipstead Fete and the Demelza Hospice Fete at the Kent County Cricket Ground, where the Band began their busy Autumn programme.  On each occasion their confident performance was met with warm applause, giving the Band two excellent opportunities to rehearse their competition arena display in preparation for national competition in October.

Riding the storm!

Two excellent parades and a well-performed arena display were a fitting way to end the school year with a Band that has seen a number of new younger members joining and the departure of seniors moving on, amidst event cancellations due to inclement weather.
